Double D Standards

If I wanted to walk down the street wearing a little strappy top as a fuller busted woman, it should be absolutely fine, but somehow it isn’t. And yes, I know we can all wear what we want…in theory, but it’s very different in practise. A little strappy top is low cut and only has thin straps, so it focusses your eye to your breasts revealing a cleavage – and the bigger the cleavage the bigger the reveal. But so what? It seems that a woman with a fuller bust revealing her cleavage is putting herself on display, inviting people to look whereas a woman who is less blessed of breast isn’t. This hardly seems fair. In the same way that a smaller chested woman can go without a bra, but the idea of going braless, and leaving the house, on anyone above a C cup is abhorrent! So, the question is, is this something that I and my fellow big boobed ladies have imposed on ourselves because we feel too ‘on display’ – probably after years of stares and comments, or is it another one of those societal rules as to what is deemed acceptable? We should all be screaming ‘fuck that!’…but we don’t. Why? I wonder how many of you have a picture of a buxom barmaid in the 80s leaning over the bar with her boobs spilling out over the drip trays whilst chatting up someone else’s husband? Yep, me too. And that is not what I want to say to the world – remember your clothes say something about you before you speak, so if that’s my vision, my belief is that it will be others’ too. In fact, I spend my life wearing stuff that detracts the eye away from my chest or to balance my frame so that it’s not the first thing people notice. I’m not sure if I do this to save myself the stares or because I genuinely believe it looks better. I also don’t think this is an age thing because I felt the same way when I was a teenager, it’s perhaps intensified as I’ve got older and my boobs have headed further south! But the feeling that putting myself ‘on display’ is somehow ‘slutty’ has been so ingrained in me from an early age – but why is it sluttier if it’s a woman with big boobs opposed to small ones? It’s ridiculous. It puts the blame on the wearer rather than the person judging because, ultimately, it’s not about the woman wearing the top, it’s about the person choosing to make assumptions about them. However, you can’t make assumptions based on a body part that they have no control over (assuming they’re natural!) – believe me I didn’t choose these puppies, they chose me!

So, it wasn’t your choice, what can you do to make the best of it – big or small:

Top Tips for Big Boobed Beauties

  • Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable
  • Get a proper bra fitting at least every two years
  • Wear wider bottoms to balance out your shape e.g. wide leg trousers, flares, A-line skirts
  • Draw attention away from your chest with collars, necklaces, scarves, earrings etc
  • Wear print or a brighter colour on your bottom half
  • High waisted bottoms can make your top half shorter especially with a low-cut top, but can be balanced with a high neck
  • Break up a high neck with necklaces or long hair to avoid that ‘shelf’ look
  • An open jacket, cardigan or waistcoat will break up the space

Top Tips for Small Boobed Sweethearts

  • Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable
  • Get a proper bra fitting at least every two years – yes, even though you’re smaller you still need to be properly supported
  • Ruffles and detail around your chest will give the illusion that you’ve got a bigger bust
  • Breast pockets will have the same effect
  • Wear print or brighter colour on your top half
  • Take advantage of all the different necklines available to you – halter neck, one shoulder, backless etc
  • Graphic tees will look great on you
  • Avoid scoop or deep v necklines

Big boobed or small boobed – it doesn’t really matter, there are pros and cons to both, and which is attributed to which is your decision, and only yours.
