The humble coat – Humble Schmumble! Coats are THE most important item of clothing in your winter wardrobe, and Claudia Winkleman is pushing my theory forward with an array of beautiful (and expensive!) coats on the current series of Traitors. A coat, or a jacket finishes an outfit, and let’s be honest it’s the thing that most people see, so let’s make it good one. A coat can be a big investment so choose wisely – make sure it’s a colour that works in your wardrobe – you can choose a neutral colour such as grey or camel, alternatively you might prefer something brighter to compliment your wardrobe and make a statement. Also consider your lifestyle, for example, if you don’t spend much time outdoors then you don’t need a big puffer jacket, however if you enjoy long walks, investing in a warm, waterproof coat is a good idea. Think about your style, for example, you may not be sporty, or outdoorsy, but you like the sports luxe look so a puffer or quilted jacket will be great on you. Let’s look at the options; a traditional wool coat is perfect for those who like a classic style, these are worth investing in as they never go out of fashion, the same goes for a trench coat, puffer coats are brilliant to keep you warm, giving a sporty, relaxed vibe, a quilted jacket is similar but ideal if you don’t spend much time outdoors as they are thinner, anoraks are essential for those who enjoy walking but they’re not exactly the height of fashion and won’t win you any deals in the boardroom! Equally wax jackets and barn jackets are still having a moment and give a relaxed, outdoorsy vibe but they don’t necessarily belong in the office. Also consider the occasion; if you want to be smart avoid more casual looks like puffers and anoraks, instead opt for a wool coat or trench. These are also great draped over the shoulders of an evening outfit or over a suit blazer.
You can change the look by switching your accessories, and winter is peak time for accessories. Add colour and texture with hats, scarves and gloves, or even a bit of sparkle – jewellery doesn’t have to be hidden underneath, try adding a brooch or big earrings! Hats are going to be a big thing in 2026 – hats can change your whole look – a woolly bobble hat or beanie is very different to a trilby or fedora, for example. A fedora elevates your outfit to something quite smart and sophisticated, and there are lots of variations of feathers etc to add to your hat to match your outfit, creating a fully co-ordinated ensemble, and look out for pillbox hats this season! Wool gives the feeling of warmth and cosiness, or why not add faux fur for a touch of luxury! Similarly, changing your footwear can alter your entire appearance. Simply switching your chunky boots to a pair of slimline Chelsea boots takes the look from trendy to classic, or going from a heel to a flat is a completely different look.
Now is the perfect time to find something at the fraction of the cost in the January sales, but please remember that it’s not a bargain if you don’t wear it, so please bear in mind all the considerations! Whatever your style, there’s a coat for you and they’re not just practical – they are a style choice, so remember to choose wisely!
